SOUTH FORT MYERS, Fla. — One person is dead and one other has been seriously injured after a vehicle crashed into a tree, quickly becoming fully engulfed in flames in the southbound lanes of I-75 at MM 135.

The Fort Myers Fire Department, South Trail Fire District, and Lee County EMS responded to the incident at 1:13 AM on Friday.

A 20-year-old Fort Myers woman was the passenger of the car and was able to exit the burning vehicle.

The vehicle was fully involved when responders arrived and the 20-year-old Fort Myers man who was entrapped inside was pronounced dead.

The female was transported to Gulf Coast Medical Center as a trauma alert.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and states that the driver lost control of the vehicle after he swerved between lanes to avoid slower moving traffic.

Expect southbound delays and road closures.
