FORT MYERS, Fla. — A woman is dead after a mental health crisis led her into a storm drain at the Fort Myers Country Club off Hill Ave in Fort Myers.
The Iona McGregor Fire District, Fort Myers Fire Department, and Lee County EMS responded to the incident at 6:24 AM on Wednesday.
The FMPD told local outlets that the woman was experiencing a mental health crisis, and upon being approached by police, entered the storm drain in an attempt to elude them.
Rescuers began to prepare a technical rescue approach and it took firefighters several hours to remove her.
She was ultimately removed from the drain fully nude and pronounced dead.
According to crews on the scene, the pipe was approximately 28 inches in diameter and was full of water when the woman entered it.
The FMPD states that Hill Ave will be closed for at least an hour as detectives investigate the incident.
